ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FILLING UP WITH PETROL- TIPS, TRICKS AND FACTS.

ALL YOU NEED  TO  KNOW ABOUT FILLING UP  WITH  PETROL- TIPS, TRICKS AND FACTS.

First of all, people are confused from which petroleum companies they should fill ?
Which is the best ? is the question.
In India, for instance, If you gonna consider the main three players, the majority of people have only three choices for buying petrol - Bharat Petroleum, Indian Oil and Hindustan Petroleum. There are other companies(Essar, Reliance etc.) also but since their reach is very limited, we will not talk about them.
My answer is going to sound a bit strange to you but honestly speaking there is not much difference in quality of oil from the major Indian oil companies- IOCL, HPCL, BPCL and I am not considering SHELL or Foreign companies . These Indian companies have refineries and they have to fulfill the parameters set by the oil ministry of India , which is same for all, so I presume quality is same for all of them.

It's not necessary that petrol which you are buying from Indian Oil petrol pump is coming out of Indian Oil's refinery. That's because none of the three companies have refineries all over India. The refiners stock their products in different depots, but what you get at their pumps may or may not be from their own refineries. That is they get oil through the nearest depot, which means HPCL can be selling oil which was refined by IOCL or BPCL, same goes for the other two .
For eg. in Coimbatore, petrol is coming from Kochi refinery through the pipeline. Kochi refinery belongs to BPCL. IOCL and HPCL get petrol from BPCL and then they send it to their petrol pump. (HPCL and BPCL refineries are located in Bombay also.)So in Coimbatore petrol is same whether you buy from BPCL's petrol pump or from IOCL's. This happens all over India. So in many cases, you don't have an option And if you notice your vehicle gives more or less millage on petrol from a certain petrol pump then the pump owner or workers are doing something wrong such as adulteration , that is why now almost every pump is made online , which will stop these activities.

Here are some of the tips you need to consider when filling petrol from filling stations:

1-)SHOULD YOU FILL FUEL WHEN PETROL TANKER IS FILLING-

Don't fuel when the fuel filling tanker is filling the underground storage: It is important to notice this as when the tankers fill fuel at the fuel station all the dirt that is settled at the bottom gets disturbed and if you are fueling at the same time it can get into your vehicle tank along with fuel and it can affect your car engine.

2. BEST TIME TO FUEL- NIGHT OR MORNING-

Often we do not realise and we refuel petrol/diesel when the tank gets to the reserve. Oil expands with the rise in temperature. This expansion causes lesser energy generation, if fueled in hot time of the day. The fuel will burn faster than what you imagine. That is you should fill Petrol when the Temperature is Low and that is in early morning hours or late evening hours. It is because of the fact that Petrol expands or contracts with respect to change in temperature.Petrol Expansion Factor is probably 1.26 per KL. So for one degree rise in temperature for 1000Ltrs petrol your expansion will be 1.26 ltrs. So, if you fill Petrol during night it will be at a low temperature and when during the day temperature rises it will expand and your tank will be having some extra quantity of petrol. So always fill your tank with petrol during low temperature hours.

3-FUEL AT NIGHT HELPS YOU SAVE UP!

What most people don’t know is many gas stations hike up their prices during the day, and once traffic slows to a crawl after midnight they drop prices to attract as many customers as possible.Try to buy your FUEL on Wednesdays, as petrol stations typically hike up their prices at the start of the week and from Thursdays forward to make money off people who are embarking on weekend trips. And always avoid buying gas on holiday weekends or the days leading up to them!

4- RUNNING YOUR CAR ON LOW PETROL-

Fuel doesn’t just serve a purpose as a combustible product; it also acts like a coolant for the electric fuel-pump motor. So when your tank runs low, this forces the pump to suck in increasingly large amounts of air, creating excess heat that can cause the fuel pump to fail prematurely.
Another problem is fuel tanks tend to grow contaminated over time, as things, such as water deposits, metal corrosion, and other impurities, get inside. Running low on fuel means all that could get sucked up if it drops too low, and it could lead to a clogged filter, or a choked fuel pump, all of which cost a lot more to fix than a full tank of fuel!

5-BEFORE YOU ASK SALESMAN TO FILL FUEL-

Always ensure that before the fuelling process is started, the pump board display reading is set at ZERO. Come out of your car while the salesman fills up your tank. Many salesmen at some petrol pumps are seen indulge in sharp malpractices.

6- INSTRUCT THE SALESMAN TO DELIVER THE FUEL SLOWLY-

Unbelievable as it may seem, the fact is that several pumps are adjusted in such a manner that if the fuel is dispensed at a fast pace, the quantity actually dispensed is less than what you pay for based upon the display reading on the pump board. It is advisable that the salesman is instructed to deliver petrol at a slow pace. You may end up getting more fuel than you pay for, much to the chagrin of the dealer.
I would like to add here that not all dealers have perfected this manipulation of pumps and that only a few dealers practice this 'art.'

7- NEVER FILL PETROL IN PLASTIC BOTTLES-

We are not allowed to fill extra fuel in plastic bottles at a petrol pump. There are various reasons for it:
  a. Explosive licence limitation: Petrol Pumps in India are administered by PESO (Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organization) which forms all the Petroleum Rules. As per section 8 of Petroleum Rules 2002, you can carry petrol upto 1 litres in glassware or stone ware bottle or upto 25 litres in metal cans from a petrol pump without any licence. But you can’t use plastic bottle for the same.
  b. Plastic dissolves in Petrol: The mineral water bottles are made up of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and pet dissolves in petrol. So while storing petrol in PET bottles the plastic may dissolve and will leak creating a dangerous situation.

☆Being informed about your rights helps. It is your right to know if the quantity being dispensed to you is correct and it's the dealer's duty to provide all necessary assistance to you. Consumer rights and the duties of the oil companies are contained in the Citizen's Charter issued by the oil companies and endorsed by the Union petroleum ministry.

☆Never Fill for common denominations like 100, 200. go for 110rs , 220rs. To avoid fake bills.

☆Always ask for a bill with your bike number before giving cash or before filling petrol.

☆Never trust petrol station staffs , always keep your eye on counter.

☆Last but not the least, Replace spark plugs once every 5 years. You must replace the spark plugs, use a better quality spark plug not the ordinary one which comes with the stock car. It improves your fuel combustion thus giving more mileage and it improves your Air condition performance.

☆Regular checking of tyre pressure: Tyre pressure must be checked once every two weeks. It helps to reduce the drag while driving thus increasing your mileage. There is a label in your car just when you open the driver seat which tells you the tyre pressure.

That's it for this blog,
Till the next time, keep smiling always and Happy Motoring...
